pps. Santa Maria Novella has a perfume that might have been worn by Catherine Medici. It is called Acqua della Regina, and has been sold since 1553. I believe it’s oldest selling perfume still in formulation? I love Santa Maria Novella but their perfumes can be very hit and miss….
You might want to research Buly too. They are a french pharmacy who also makes water based perfumes and has DELIGHTFUL luxurious packaging. I wear their tuberose perfume and madagascar ambre perfume all the time and always get compliments. They have very clean ingredients and very informative beatifically printed illustrated booklets on the history of their products. They also sell raw ingredients and will engrave initials on combs, lip balm compacts etc… I could go on forever I love them so much.
Unplanned...however, went to start winding myself down for the night and began putting some intentionality inspired by this piece. Lit a lavender incense and selected a specific essential oil to perfume myself for bedtime. Not sure if it's THE ONE. Super fun!
I used to be a massage therapist and for many years have used a few drops of organic lavender oil on the soles of my feet before bed. It gets the relaxation benefits through the system quickly and will relax your whole body.
Lavender is about the only essential oil that can be used undiluted on the skin. Along with tea tree which I don't use for a night routine!
I used this little trick with clients who came in for relaxation purposes and it worked like a charm. They'd be stressed and in a very short time they'd be extremely relaxed. It meant they got more out of the massage.
Rose is another wonderful essential oil but it's extremely expensive. Hydrosol is not- it's rose water which is a byproduct of the essential oil distillation process. It can be used as a spray around the face and body and is uplifting calming and heart healing. There are other hydrosol's available, organic lavender is a lovely one to have for a quick spritz.
My favorite way to use rose hydrosol is in tea, I use organic earl grey. I like about a tablespoon but it's really to taste. Start with a teaspoon as it's strong and work your way up.
Ok so the perfumed bath got me inspired. Ran a bath for myself and filled it with dried lavender. It turned purple and I felt like an ancient queen. Cannot recommend enough. Just need a team of chambermaids now 💫
Nothing has inspired me to finally get more into essential oils than this read. I’m imagining a little shelf of glass vials where I act as my own custom perfumer each night, stirring up a dreamy blend and anointing myself with it before drifting off to sleep
such a fun read! I am so inspired and motivated to do something similar to these routines, having someone to help you go through them must have been why they did it so often though. I also hope to have my own scents created by my own hand, hopefully sometime in the future.
omg thank you! that is literally the most motivating thing to hear, you are so kind! i absolutely loveee incorporating these into my night routine, maybe ill do an updated night routine and show how I personally add them in? would love to see yours, too!
You know, people talk about how beauty standards are inflicted upon women. Well no one is having to inflict this upon me, most of this sounds absolutely divine, and I am grateful that as women it's acceptable and encouraged to spend so much time and attention on ourselves in this way.
Obsessed with all of this. I have just started taking a fantastically long bath on Monday evenings, with lavender Epsom salt! Helps with a soft start to the week. 🖤 Please, tell me where the art is from! It’s gorgeous.
Love the whole idea of the routines of the royals. We don’t have to start romanticizing from scratch. I’m so glad I found you!
omg thank you so much!! that sounds incredible. also if you can find out where the art is from pls tell me i am obsessed with it! i found it years ago on pinterest. if you love this post then we have lots in common, im so happy you found it. <33
souvenir de la malmaison is my favorite rose and named after Josephine’s garden! The smells brings me back to childhood. It’s a sharp green peppery rose that fades into sweetness and dew.
I am curious about their morning routines.. did Cleopatra wash the castor oil out each morning?
ps. I think you could love Calia , a canadian brand, for their essential oils. And also Chidoriya for their clean ingredients. They are a japanese brand that was originally made for geishas. It’s like the OG tatcha. Their peach moon herbal water is amazing and smells soooooo good. I used to know their rep that would visit NYC and they are a sweet, small brand.

Have you considered a chat about this?
This makes me want to craft my own romanticized, in-depth, nighttime routine.
